Volunteers

Volunteers Needed!

Swim Aides
We are in need of parents that would like to help out with the coaching staff in particular
with the 8 & unders.  If you are interested, even if it can only be for one day a week, please
let us know.  The more coaches we have in the water, the more the children will benefit.

Meet Volunteer Coordinator
Michelle Krehbiel will be coordinating the volunteers for all meets.  Once you sign up for a
meet, it is your responsibility to get another parent to fill in if you can’t make it.

Michelle will arrange to have all parents sign up as many times as needed in order to fill up
the positions.  If there are any vacant volunteer positions, Michelle will have to fill them in
herself by first seeing who hadn’t signed up to volunteer & then by going down the list.

Referee
Works home meets.  The Referee has authority over all meet officials to assign and
instruct them.  The referee enforces all rules and mediates any conflict with rules relating to
the conduct of the meet.  The referee has the authority to disqualify a swimmer for any
violation of the rules that the referee personally observes (except for false starts).  At the
beginning of each race, the referee shall signal to the starter that all officials are in position
and that the course is clear and competition can begin.  The referee shall make a decision
on all points where the opinions of the judges differ.  Other responsibilities as will be
defined and trained at the clinic.

Starter
Works home meets.  The official in charge - Initiates every event using a starting gun or an
electronic starter signaling the beginning of a race and, with the Referee, making certain
that all swimmers start legally.  Coordinates with Head Timer and Clerks of Course.

Timer
Works home and away meets.  Three timers are assigned to each lane to time the
swimmers in each event. One of these timers from each lane will be designated as the
one to record the swimmer’s times on a time slip.  As a timer you will be asked to operate a
stop watch.  Additional duties include maintaining organization of the individual event cards
handed to you by swimmers, and double checking to make sure the correct swimmer is in
the correct lane and heat.   At the completion of the swimmer’s event in your assigned lane,
you record their time onto the event card or a heat sheet.  A runner then comes by to collect
the cards from you.  This is a very easy job to do.  It’s also the best seat in the house!  No
experience is necessary

** Perfect for new parents, no experience required and spend time with other parents.

Head Timer
Works home meets.  The Head Timer is in charge of all individual lane timers and making
sure that each lane is properly staffed.  The Head Timer also runs backup stop watches.
Assigns lanes and teaches volunteers how to use a stopwatch.  Acts as backup timer in
case of a timing failure in any lane.

Data Entry

database.  Must be accurate and not afraid of a computer.

Scorer
Works home and away meets.  Need 1 per meet.  Works the entire meet at the scoring
table sorting the heat cards for each heat, reading times to the data entry person, writing
the 1st – 6th place awards on the corresponding cards, and running scored cards to
Ribbon Writers.

Ribbon Writers
Works home and away meets.  Need 2 per meet.  Works the entire meet at ribbon writing
table, writing swimmers’ places and times or preprinted labels and affixing them to the
corresponding ribbons.  This includes participation ribbons.

Head Clerk of Course
Works home and away meets.  A critical official who lines up each swimmer by event and
lane according to the meet sheet.  Swimmers will report to the clerk of course to pick up
their event card.  The Clerk of Course may act as a holding pen for swimmers as well,
keeping the swimmers in one specific area and releasing them to the area behind the
starting blocks, as necessary.

**Knowledge of who the swimmers are is necessary.

Assistant Clerk of Course
Works home and away meets.  Assists the Clerk of Course and Coaches in lining up the
swimmers for each race.

Stroke & Turn Judge
Work home and away meets.  We need 4 volunteers for this, 2 for each meet home and
away.  Monitors one quarter of the pool, as determined by the Referee.  Determines that all
swimmers are executing the proper strokes and turns, at the start, middle, turns, and
finishes of ALL strokes, as set forth by United States Swimming rules.  Judges also judge
the relay starts to ensure no early starts.  Training will be provided for this.* Training Clinic

Meet Photographer
Works home and away meets.  The Meet Photographer is responsible for taking close-ups
& casual pictures of swimmers, officials, coaches and spectators throughout the meet.
These pictures are later used to produce a dvd slideshow at the end of season.
